The main topic at the July 29 Hayden City Council meeting was the Authorization to Publish the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget in accordance with Idaho Code 50-1002. Our city manager delivered a comprehensive and informative presentation on the proposed budget.
After much discussion and political theater (not by me), the majority of the council voted to publish the budget as it was written so it could be published in a timely manner. I supported this action, even though it includes the full 3% levy rate, because we have planned further discussions in three weeks to consider options for reducing that rate.
It's important to note that the current budget decisions are also linked to ongoing negotiations with the Sheriff’s Department, which require careful consideration. I am committed to achieving a fair agreement for public safety services while keeping taxes as low as possible and ensuring that Hayden residents get the best value for their tax dollars.
I’m dedicated to maintaining keeping taxes as low as possible while making fiscally responsible decisions. I have a history of voting against expences that don't seem necessary.
For the sake of transparency, I wish this meeting had been video recorded. Our capable IT Director was present to record audio, so video recording could likely have been done at no extra cost.Transparency and accountability are essential pillars of good governance. In my opinion, not video recording this meeting was a missed opportunity to openly share important information about the city's budget and operations. Video recordings are available on YouTube 24/7 in the privacy of your own home while audio recordings need to have you submit a formal information request to the City Clerk and wait for a response. People shouldn’t have to struggle to learn how decisions are being made with their tax dollars. Keeping things open and convenient builds trust—and that’s how we better serve the community.
